these are some of the most vulnerable and disenfranchised mad people, and we need to give them a voice.

self diagnosis is not just for low support needs autistics.

there are some cultures where people don’t know what autism is and wouldn’t know how to recognize even the most high support needs cases.

there are some parents who refuse to get their child diagnosed out of fear of what the doctor will say, even if their child has severe communication issues.

there are autistics who have been misdiagnosed with other conditions.

there are people with fragile x who have autism and haven’t been diagnosed because their traits are assumed to be apart of fragile x syndrome.

there are people whose parents thought there was a blood test for autism and since it came back “negative,” their child can’t have autism, even though they are severely disabled by their traits.

there are people with FASD who are in a similar boat to those with fragile x and other conditions, where their traits are put down to FASD and not autism.

there are people with high support needs autism who haven’t been told that they are autistic.

there are people with severe ADHD who were told that ADHD and autism cannot be diagnosed together as per the DSM-4.

let’s stop the narrative that self diagnosis is only for low support needs/high masking autistics.
